The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of no fewer than 951 officers of the Nigeria Police Force, marking one of the largest promotion exercises in recent years.

The development was contained in an official wireless message issued from the Force Headquarters, Abuja, and circulated to senior police commands nationwide.

According to the document titled “Police Wireless Message”, hundreds of officers were elevated from the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). The directive stated that the promotions would take effect from the dates indicated against each officer’s name.

The signal, referenced SH.4730/FS/FHQ/ABJ/T.1/58, was dispatched to zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police across all states, and critical formations such as INTERPOL, MOPOL, Bomb Disposal, Border Patrol, Maritime, Terrorism Units, and the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID).

    Among those promoted are:

    • Maidawa Yakubu (AP126345)

    • Edwin A. Thomas (AP129283)

    • Chagga Yakubu (AP136869)

    • Ofem Liket Hassan (AP130266)

    • Sabo Danladi Mamuda (AP137436)

    • Omini Dickson (AP134041)

    • Bassey Alobo (AP132333)

    • Enyinnaya Ejimadu (AP132430)

    • Grace Dkon (AP132337)

The full list contains 951 names, spanning officers in all states and specialised police units.

    Promotions Amid Police Welfare Crisis

This promotion exercise comes at a time when the Nigeria Police Force is under intense public scrutiny over issues such as corruption, inadequate welfare, and flawed recruitment processes.

Just weeks ago, on July 21, human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore led a protest demanding improved welfare for police officers and retirees. Protesters highlighted the poor conditions of service, including meagre retirement benefits.

While Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has taken steps to ease rising tensions—such as forwarding welfare-related proposals to the National Assembly and setting up a new committee—the force has also moved to prosecute Sowore. Authorities allege that his protest could have incited mutiny within the ranks.

Nevertheless, the promotions signal an attempt by the police leadership to boost morale among officers, even as broader concerns about welfare and service conditions remain unresolved.
