Hope Restored: Commuters Praise Ongoing Reconstruction of Abeokuta-Ifo-Sango-Ota-Lagos Expressway

The long-awaited reconstruction of the Abeokuta-Ifo-Sango-Ota-Lagos expressway is finally reshaping the experience of road users. For years, motorists battled with potholes, traffic gridlocks, and frequent accidents, but with visible progress on the project, there’s renewed hope for safer and smoother journeys.

The project, which was flagged off in August 2023 by Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, is scheduled for completion within 18 months. Currently, five construction gangs are working simultaneously at strategic points—Olomore, Midgad/Metroxide, Papanlanto Junction, Owode, and the Toll Gate axis. Significant work has already been completed, including earthworks, stone bases, drainage, and asphalt laying.

Repaired Sections Now Open to Traffic

Previously failed portions around Brewery, Obada, and Itori Junction—stretching up to Lafarge Cement Factory, Ewekoro—have been repaired and reopened to motorists. This has reduced the heavy traffic congestion that once plagued the route.

    Traditional Ruler Commends Efforts

The Olu of Itori, Oba Abdul Fatai Akorede Akamo, expressed gratitude to Governor Abiodun, describing the reconstruction as a long-overdue intervention. According to him, the project demonstrates the governor’s commitment to promises, noting that no past administration had taken bold steps to address the road’s deplorable state.

“Our governor is a man of his word. Despite being a federal road, he chose to fix it, and we are seeing results. This is a giant stride we will never forget,” the monarch said.

Motorists Notice Fewer Accidents and Smoother Rides

Transporters and daily road users also praised the pace of work. Opeyemi Akindele, a transporter on the Abeokuta-Papalanto route, recalled how bad sections once forced drivers onto dangerous one-way lanes. He said the repairs have significantly reduced accidents and breakdowns.

“Some portions used to be like swimming pools, but now driving is smooth. Governor Abiodun has done well,” Akindele said.
He also appealed for a trailer park between Papalanto Junction and Lafarge Cement Plant to prevent heavy trucks from blocking the road.

    Residents Express Relief

Local residents such as Ololade Anjolaoluwa and Akande Michael echoed similar sentiments, saying the project has already eased traffic bottlenecks and restored safety along the corridor.

Michael emphasized that although work is still ongoing, the difference is already visible:

“Accidents have reduced, and movement is much better. From Itori to Papalanto, the contractors are doing a fantastic job. We appreciate the government’s efforts.”

     Why This Matters

The Abeokuta-Ifo-Sango-Ota-Lagos expressway is one of the busiest routes connecting Ogun and Lagos States, playing a vital role in commerce, industry, and daily commuting. Its reconstruction not only improves safety but also boosts economic activity by ensuring goods and people move with fewer delays.

     Final Thoughts
With the Abiodun-led administration’s commitment and support from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the road project is on track to transform one of Nigeria’s busiest highways. For the first time in years, commuters are hopeful that this long-neglected route will soon become a pride of Ogun State.
