India Stands Firm Against U.S. Tariffs: Russia Applauds Modi’s Resilience

In a world where global trade is increasingly used as a political weapon, India has proven that resilience and independence still hold weight. Russia has publicly commended New Delhi for refusing to bow to pressure from former U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policies.

Speaking with Indonesian newspaper Kompas, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his steadfast approach. Lavrov noted that despite Trump’s threats to impose heavier tariffs on countries dealing with Russia, India has maintained its long-standing partnership with Moscow.

A Strategic Partnership Built on Trust

Lavrov described India as a “privileged strategic partner” — a status that reflects the depth of cooperation between the two nations. India remains one of the world’s largest consumers of Russian goods, particularly energy resources like oil and gas.

By standing firm against U.S. pressure, Lavrov said, India has shown a commitment to principles of free trade rather than yielding to external influence.

A Subtle Critique of U.S. Foreign Policy

The Kremlin did not shy away from criticizing Washington. Lavrov pointed out that the United States has often gone back on principles it once promoted, highlighting a double standard in its global trade policies.

Russia, he emphasized, builds partnerships based on mutual value rather than using them to undermine others. “We never make friends to oppose a third party,” Lavrov added, stressing that Russia’s trade deals — with India, Indonesia, or any other nation — are rooted in mutual benefit, not rivalry with the U.S.

    Why This Matters

For India, this resilience strengthens its position on the world stage as a nation unwilling to compromise its independence under global pressure. For Russia, it showcases a key ally that continues to stand firm against Western influence. And for the world, it serves as a reminder that global trade doesn’t always have to be about conflict — it can be about partnership, balance, and respect.
