In a heartbreaking incident that has left many in shock, police in Kamba town, Dandi Local Government Area of Kebbi State have arrested 20-year-old Maryam Atiku for allegedly attempting to bury her newborn baby girl alive.
How the Incident Happened
According to police investigations, Maryam reportedly wrapped three pieces of cloth around the infant’s neck, covered her mouth, and carried her to a bush near Malam Yaro village. There, she dug a shallow hole and buried the baby, leaving her to die.
Farmer’s Quick Action Saves Baby
The tragic act was discovered when Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad, a local farmer, noticed freshly disturbed soil on his farmland. Sensing something unusual, he raised an alarm and, with the help of other villagers, dug up the spot. To their astonishment, they found the baby still alive.
The child was immediately rushed to Kamba General Hospital, where doctors confirmed she was in stable condition after receiving treatment.
Police Response
The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Maryam shortly after the report was filed. Police spokesman Nafiu Abubakar revealed that the suspect had confessed to the crime during interrogation.

Reacting to the incident, the Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, Bello M. Sani, strongly condemned the act, emphasizing that the police command maintains a zero-tolerance policy against child abuse, exploitation, and gender-based violence.
