The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Niger State Directorate, has called on citizens to take an active role in promoting security by reporting suspicious activities to relevant security agencies for timely intervention.
Speaking in Minna during a public roadshow, the state NOA Director, Mallam Yahaya Ibrahim Gbongbo, emphasized that security is a shared responsibility and that early reporting of potential threats can help prevent attacks in communities.
According to Gbongbo, the agency has been engaging with different groups, including traders, drivers, health workers, students, and community leaders, to raise awareness about security and the importance of collective vigilance.
He further explained that the NOA is also using its outreach to sensitize residents on key government policies and initiatives, such as:
-
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) – to support students with affordable education financing.
-
Flooding and disaster preparedness – to reduce the impact of natural disasters on communities.
-
National values re-orientation – focusing on students and youths.
-
Awareness of Nigerian identity and national symbols – to strengthen patriotism.
Gbongbo expressed concern about youth restiveness and drug abuse, particularly during celebratory events such as “signing-off” ceremonies, stressing the need for positive lifestyle choices and constructive engagement.
The NOA Deputy Director of Programmes, Sani Abubakar, also noted that bandits and other criminal groups often conduct surveillance before launching attacks. He urged residents to provide timely intelligence to security operatives to help curb such threats.
Abubakar further encouraged Nigerians to take advantage of available government programmes, stressing that many citizens miss out on opportunities due to lack of awareness or interest.
Conclusion
The NOA’s message is clear: security begins with the people. By being watchful, reporting suspicious activities, and embracing government initiatives, residents of Niger State can play a vital role in building safer and more resilient communities.
