In a bold move to promote transparency and strengthen financial discipline, Niger State governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has announced a strategic partnership with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).
The collaboration, unveiled at the 20th Northern Zonal Accountants’ Conference in Minna, is focused on auditing the state’s financial records, correcting anomalies, and identifying opportunities to improve its accounting system.
Speaking at the event themed “Accountability and National Re-orientation: Unlocking Nigeria’s Socio-Economic Potentials,” Governor Bago emphasized that the initiative would serve as a model for other states across the federation.
“Transparency and fiscal discipline are essential for good governance and for unlocking the vast potentials of Niger State’s economy,” the governor noted.
He further stressed that accountability, trust-building, and strong institutions are key drivers of national values and economic growth. The governor assured citizens that his administration would remain committed to strengthening systems of accountability for the benefit of the people.
The governor also urged participants of the conference to put forward practical recommendations that could help government institutions at all levels inspire public confidence and deliver more efficiently.
On his part, ICAN President, Mallam Haruna Nma Yahaya, applauded the partnership and reaffirmed ICAN’s commitment to remaining independent in auditing the state’s financial books. He described the move as a progressive step that aligns with global best practices in governance and public finance.
This development signals a new era of transparency for Niger State and reflects the broader push for accountability in Nigeria’s governance system.
