In a bold move to improve the condition of public primary schools, the Niger State House of Assembly has directed the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to ensure that all local government councils allocate 5% of their monthly funds to the Local Government Education Authority (LGEA).

This decision was taken during a plenary session after a motion was raised by Muhammad Sani Idris, the member representing Tafa Constituency. Idris stressed the need for urgent attention, noting that the poor state of primary schools reflects years of neglect.

According to him, channeling part of the monthly allocations to education will provide much-needed running costs for the LGEA and help maintain school facilities.

The House unanimously supported the motion and further directed local governments to:

    • Constitute and fund Local Government and District Education Committees by providing allowances and operational support, in line with Section 10 of the Niger State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB) Law.

    • Work with NSUBEB to design and implement a proper maintenance plan for all public schools, clearly outlining the roles of state, local governments, and communities.

    • Organize a tripartite meeting involving the Ministries of Local Government, Education, NSUBEB, LGEAs, and other education stakeholders to create a long-term solution.

The Speaker of the House, Abdulmalik Mohammed Sarkin-Daji, instructed the Clerk, Mallam Farouq Umar Isah, to transmit the resolution to the executive for immediate action.

If implemented effectively, this move could mark a turning point for the education sector in Niger State, ensuring safer and more conducive learning environments for children.
