In the early hours of Wednesday morning, armed men stormed a police checkpoint in Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, a border community that links the state with Kwara.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers engaged the police officers in a fierce gun battle. Sadly, three police officers were killed, while the assailants escaped with the officers’ rifles.

Local sources told Jamflash that the attackers appeared to have specifically targeted the checkpoint for weapons.

“They came for their guns and carted them away after killing the officers,” a resident disclosed.

Videos circulating online show vehicles allegedly used by the gunmen as they fled the scene.

Meanwhile, in a separate but equally devastating incident, suspected bandits raided a settlement in Bokungi, Tsaragi community, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, around midnight on Tuesday.

According to locals, the attackers arrived around 12 a.m., shooting sporadically to disperse residents before targeting Fulani settlements belonging to Alhaji Garuba and Alhaji Mumini.

Tragically, Muhammadu, the newly married son of Alhaji Mumini, was shot dead during the raid.

Unable to gain access into Garuba’s house, the attackers shifted focus to his cattle, rustling hundreds of cows. Sources estimate that nearly 1,000 cows were stolen.

“They moved nearly 700 cows through Bokungi and Fengewa, firing into the air as they went. Soldiers and vigilantes tried to intercept them, but we don’t know if they succeeded,” one resident explained.

The raid has left the community in shock, with many questioning the effectiveness of the security response.

These twin attacks highlight the growing insecurity in parts of Nigeria, with both police officers and civilians falling victim. Residents of both Kogi and Kwara States have urged authorities to intensify patrols and strengthen border security to prevent future tragedies.
