On Wednesday, September 10, 2025, many Nigerians experienced yet another nationwide power outage after the country’s national grid collapsed around 11:20 am.

In a statement released by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), the collapse was traced to the tripping of a power generation company (GenCo). This sudden disruption triggered a chain reaction across other generating companies, ultimately destabilizing the entire grid system.

According to NISO, efforts to restore supply began almost immediately. By 11:45 am, the restoration process kicked off, starting with Abuja through the Shiroro power plant. Since then, substantial progress has been made, with electricity already restored in parts of the capital city.

The agency further assured Nigerians that a comprehensive investigation is underway to identify both the immediate and long-term causes of the grid collapse. The findings, NISO explained, will help implement preventive measures to minimize the risk of future occurrences.

“The disturbance was caused by the tripping of a GenCo, which led to a significant load drop and cascaded across the system. Restoration began promptly, and a full investigation into both immediate and remote causes is ongoing,” NISO noted.

While restoration continues across other states, Nigerians are urged to remain patient as the power system stabilizes.

This latest incident highlights the fragile state of Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure, underscoring the need for stronger investments in grid stability and power generation reliability.
