The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano State Command, has intercepted 150 blocks and three sacks of cannabis sativa weighing 112kg after a dramatic road accident on the Zaria–Kano highway.

According to the NDLEA spokesperson, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, the incident occurred at about 6 a.m. on Saturday, September 6, near Gadar Tamburawa.

NDLEA patrol officers, who were close to the scene, responded immediately after hearing a loud crash involving a Volkswagen Golf and a truck.

The operatives broke through the Golf’s windscreen and doors to rescue the driver and passenger. However, one of the occupants attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended.

A search of the vehicle revealed large quantities of cannabis concealed within.

The arrested driver admitted he was working for a drug consignor and had previously transported similar consignments both within and outside Kano.

He further confessed to using one-way routes to avoid NDLEA checkpoints before the accident occurred.

Currently, the Golf driver is receiving medical care while under investigation, while the truck driver sustained a fracture from the collision.

In its statement, NDLEA highlighted that the case involved two serious offenses:

    1. Driving against traffic, which caused the crash.

    2. Drug trafficking involving a large consignment of cannabis.

The agency has urged citizens to avoid drug trafficking and to report any suspicious drug-related activity.

    Jamflash Takeaway:
This incident once again underlines the dangers of drug trafficking on Nigerian highways. Beyond the security risks, reckless driving adds another layer of threat to innocent road users. NDLEA’s swift response helped prevent a major drug delivery from reaching Kano.
