The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has revealed that toxicological tests carried out on the flight crew of an Air Peace aircraft that veered off the runway at Port Harcourt International Airport on June 13, 2025, returned positive results for drugs and alcohol.

In a preliminary report released on Friday, the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance Bureau, Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, confirmed that both the captain and first officer were indicted after tests showed traces of alcohol consumption. Additionally, a member of the cabin crew tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the psychoactive compound found in cannabis.

    According to the NSIB,

“Initial toxicological tests conducted on the flight crew revealed positive results for certain substances, including alcohol. A cabin crew member also tested positive for THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis.”

The Bureau further disclosed that toxicological screening showed the presence of ethyl glucuronide, a biomarker for recent alcohol intake, in the systems of the captain and co-pilot.

Thankfully, despite the runway excursion involving the Air Peace Boeing 737, no damage was recorded, and no casualties were reported.

The NSIB emphasized that these findings are still preliminary and form part of a broader investigation into human performance and safety management issues surrounding the incident.

    Summary:
This shocking revelation raises fresh concerns about aviation safety in Nigeria, especially regarding strict compliance with international standards for crew health and performance.
