The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State has taken a significant step in repositioning itself for political victory by inaugurating a 20-member committee to oversee its upcoming congress.
The inauguration ceremony, held on Friday at the PDP secretariat in Calabar, was conducted by the state chairman, Vena Ikem, and witnessed by several party stakeholders.
Ikem described the newly formed congress planning committee, chaired by Prof. Zana Akpagu (former Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar), as “a galaxy of stars”, reflecting the caliber of people still committed to the PDP in the state.
He further emphasized that the PDP is determined to leverage the weaknesses of the ruling APC-led administration in Cross River State, turning them into opportunities for electoral success.
“We need to focus our energy on what we are doing in our state, take advantage of APC’s mistakes, reposition our party, and transform them into victory,” Ikem stated.
Currently, the PDP maintains firm control of the Cross River North Senatorial District and is now strategizing to secure another senatorial district as part of its roadmap to reclaim broader political influence.
Ikem also reassured supporters that, despite challenges at the national level, the PDP still enjoys credibility and remains a platform for individuals driven by conviction and courage to serve. He dismissed national issues facing the party as “superficial” and temporary.
In his acceptance remarks, Prof. Zana Akpagu pledged the committee’s commitment to the task ahead:
“We wholeheartedly accept this responsibility. We know the weight of this task and we are not taking it for granted,” he affirmed.
With this development, the PDP in Cross River State is positioning itself for a stronger political presence ahead of future elections.
