The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced the suspension of its nationwide strike, granting the Federal Government a two-week window to fully implement agreements concerning doctors’ welfare and training.
NARD members had embarked on a warning strike on September 12, 2025, protesting poor welfare conditions and outstanding entitlements.
In a statement jointly signed by NARD President, Dr. Tope Osundara, and Secretary General, Dr. Odunbaku Kazeem Oluwasola, the association explained that the decision to suspend the strike came after the government began disbursing the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) to doctors who were previously owed.
According to the leadership, the suspension was also influenced by the hardship Nigerians face in accessing healthcare during the ongoing economic challenges.
“After due deliberations, considering the plight of Nigerians grappling with health issues in this harsh economy, the NEC resolved to suspend the strike action effective 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 14, 2025, to allow the government a two-week window to fully implement the demands contained in our communiqué,” the statement read.
Ultimatum to Oyo State Government
NARD also issued a stern warning to the Oyo State Government, urging it to address the unresolved issues at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, within the 15-day ultimatum earlier given by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Oyo State branch.
Failure to comply, the statement noted, would compel the National Officers Committee (NOC) of NARD to direct all resident doctors in Oyo State to embark on an indefinite solidarity strike.
The association further called on other state governments across Nigeria to promptly resolve pending welfare challenges affecting doctors in their respective states.
Meanwhile, doctors working in state-owned tertiary hospitals have been instructed to continue their industrial action until their individual state governments show genuine commitment to resolving their grievances.
