Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, is buzzing with excitement as fourteen countries from across the globe have arrived for the first-ever International Para-Badminton Championship alongside the prestigious All-African Badminton Championship.

Among the participating nations are Brazil, India, Peru, Cameroon, Benin Republic, Tunisia, Mauritius, Rwanda, Egypt, and Zimbabwe, alongside several others, marking this as a truly international gathering.

The Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Nwobilor Ananaba, confirmed the arrival while addressing journalists. Represented by Mr. Raymond Chima Ukwa, Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports, he revealed that over 150 international athletes and 60 officials are set to participate in the event.

According to him, the government has provided world-class playing courts with high-quality nets and mats, while also prioritizing security and a safe, welcoming atmosphere for players and officials.

The President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih, expressed gratitude to Governor Alex Otti for making the event possible. He assured fans and participants that every arrangement has been concluded to deliver a smooth and successful championship.

Adding to the excitement, Jeff Shigoli, Chief Executive Officer of the Badminton Confederation Africa (BCA), and Dr. Ahmed Reda, Head of Operations at the Badminton World Federation, applauded Nigeria’s commitment. They noted that this makes Nigeria the third African country to host para-badminton activities, a milestone in promoting inclusivity in African sports.

The twin championships will run from September 30 to October 12, 2025, promising not only thrilling matches but also opportunities to showcase Abia State’s hospitality, culture, and readiness to host the international community.

With the blend of global participation and African unity, the games are expected to leave a lasting legacy in Nigeria’s sports history.
