The Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has fixed Thursday, October 2, 2025, for judgment in a case challenging the removal of the Chairman and members of the Rivers State Local Government Service Commission.
The suit was filed by Reverend Goodlife Iduoku Ben, Amadi Christian Echele, Chimenem Wisdom Jerome, and three other members who were appointed and sworn in by Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The group argues that their removal by the former Sole Administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas, was illegal and unconstitutional.
Background of the Case
According to the claimants, they were duly confirmed by the Rivers State House of Assembly before receiving their appointment letters from the governor. They maintain that all necessary confirmation records were already in the custody of the House Clerk, making their appointments valid.
However, controversy began when the former Sole Administrator announced their sack and attempted to replace them without following due process. The aggrieved members insist that Ibas had no legal authority to suspend or appoint a new Commission.
Court’s Position So Far
During earlier hearings, Justice Frank Onyiri barred Ibas from inaugurating a new Commission, ruling that the status quo must be maintained until final judgment is delivered.
Although the court had earlier scheduled judgment, Justice Onyiri adjourned the case after requesting more time. The new date has now been set for October 2, 2025.
Defendants in the Suit
The case lists several defendants, including the former Sole Administrator (representing the state government), the Accountant General of Rivers State, Access Bank, Zenith Bank, and eleven others.
The ruling is highly anticipated as it could set a new precedent on how state service commissions are governed in Rivers State.
