The Umuahia Township Stadium came alive on Thursday as Abia Warriors Football Club delivered an impressive performance, defeating reigning champions Remo Stars 2-0 in a rescheduled Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) fixture.
The victory came as a perfect response just four days after the Warriors crashed out of the CAF Confederation Cup, losing 2-1 on aggregate to Djoliba of Mali.
Abia Warriors took the lead in the first half through their talismanic forward Emeka Obioma, who displayed clinical finishing to put the home side ahead. In the second half, captain for the day Sunday Megwo extended the lead from the penalty spot after Suraj Lawal was brought down in Remo Stars’ box.
Remo Stars, desperate to find their way back into the game, pressed hard and almost leveled in the 53rd minute. However, goalkeeper Okiemute Odah pulled off a stunning point-blank save to deny the visitors, leaving their fans in disbelief.
The victory marked Remo Stars’ second defeat of the season, and Abia Warriors’ faithful could not hide their excitement. Many supporters praised the team for redeeming themselves after their continental disappointment, hailing the win as a morale booster moving forward in the NPFL campaign.
