The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibadan Zonal Directorate, has recorded another major win in its fight against cybercrime.
A total of 21 online fraudsters were convicted before the Federal High Court and the High Court of Oyo State, both sitting in Ibadan.
According to reports, the convicts — including Waheed Hamid Aromose, Aliu Abayomi Victor, Ugbe Emmanuel Ukali, Ajewole Segun Abraham, and 17 others — faced charges ranging from impersonation and obtaining money by false pretense to unlawful retention of proceeds of crime.
All defendants pleaded guilty to their respective charges. As a result, the courts handed down different sentences, including:
-
Community service
-
Jail terms
-
Monetary fines
-
Forfeiture of luxury items such as a Mercedes Benz GLK and Toyota Camry cars
The verdicts were delivered by Justices Uche Agomoh, O.S. Adeyemi, Ladiran Akintola, R.B. Olawoyin, O.S. Adeniyi, O.A. Adetujoye, M.O. Ishola, and Bayo Taiwo.
This development highlights the EFCC’s continued clampdown on cybercrime in Oyo State and its determination to hold offenders accountable.
Jamflash Takeaway:
The rising number of internet fraud cases in Nigeria remains a cause for concern. However, the EFCC’s proactive stance in securing these convictions shows that law enforcement is making strides in curbing the menace.
