The Minister of the Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has revealed that the Federal Government of Nigeria is currently reviewing 170 applications from foreign nationals seeking Nigerian citizenship.
The minister made this known on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday morning, sharing updates on the ongoing review process handled by the Citizenship Advisory Committee (CAC). The committee is responsible for evaluating and recommending qualified applicants for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s final approval.
“Before us, for review, is a total of 170 applications from foreigners across the globe applying for Nigerian citizenship. Citizenship of the biggest black nation on earth is a valuable asset that requires careful consideration,” Tunji-Ojo stated.
He further emphasized that the review process would be guided strictly by integrity, merit, and proven character, assuring Nigerians that the government will not compromise on standards.
The Citizenship Advisory Committee, according to the minister, includes representatives from key government bodies such as:
-
Ministry of Justice
-
Ministry of Foreign Affairs
-
Department of State Services (DSS)
-
Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS)
Dr. Tunji-Ojo highlighted that the collaboration among these agencies ensures a transparent and thorough evaluation process before any applicant is granted Nigerian citizenship.
He described Nigerian citizenship as “a prestigious status and a symbol of pride”, adding that those who wish to join the country must demonstrate genuine respect for its values and commitment to national development.
This announcement underscores the Federal Government’s renewed focus on strengthening Nigeria’s immigration and citizenship framework, while maintaining fairness and credibility in handling foreign applications.
