Kwara United and Abia Warriors Crash Out of CAF Confederation Cup

Kwara United’s journey in the CAF Confederation Cup came to an unfortunate end after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Ghanaian giants, Asante Kotoko, on Sunday in Abeokuta.

Despite putting up a strong performance, the Harmony Boys failed to convert their chances in front of goal, ultimately losing the preliminary round tie 5-3 on aggregate. The decisive moment came in the 53rd minute when Asante Kotoko’s forward, Hubert Ayau, struck the only goal of the game.

Head coach Tunde Sanni’s men dominated possession and created several opportunities, but poor finishing cost them a place in the next round of the competition.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s other representative, Abia Warriors, also bowed out of the tournament after a 1-0 defeat to Djoliba of Mali. The Malian side secured a 2-1 aggregate victory to progress further, leaving Nigeria without a team in this year’s CAF Confederation Cup.

Both exits highlight the urgent need for Nigerian clubs to improve their continental performances if they hope to compete strongly on Africa’s biggest stages.
