A heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Akwanga town, Nasarawa State, on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, when residents found a newborn baby girl abandoned in a bush near Hope Academy Primary School in the A. A. Koto area.
According to reports, locals quickly rushed to the scene after hearing faint cries, leading to the baby’s rescue. Thankfully, the child was found alive and in stable condition.
Mother Arrested
Authorities revealed that the baby’s mother is a final-year NCE student of the College of Education, Akwanga. She allegedly dumped the baby shortly after delivery.
With the assistance of her friends and schoolmates, the young woman was identified and later arrested by the police.
At the moment, no official statement has been released regarding the motive behind her actions.
A Growing Concern in Nigeria
This is not an isolated case. Instances of newborn abandonment have been on the rise across Nigeria.
Just last week, Daily Post reported another disturbing case in Kebbi State, where a woman identified as Maryam Atiku was arrested for attempting to bury her baby alive. The baby was found wrapped in cloth, with the mother trying to suffocate her before carrying the infant into a bush.
