In preparation for the upcoming November 1 local government elections, political parties and candidates in Niger State have signed a peace accord to promote a transparent and violence-free process.

The event, organized by the Niger State Police Command under the leadership of Commissioner Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, took place at the Police Officers’ Mess in Minna. The gathering brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC), the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), government officials, security agencies, and political party representatives.

Commissioner Elleman reaffirmed the Police Command’s commitment to neutrality, professionalism, and fairness, stressing that the police will provide a safe environment before, during, and after the elections. He also appealed to the youth to shun violence and embrace peace, emphasizing that peaceful participation is the foundation of a credible electoral process.

In his remarks, NSIEC Chairman Mohammed Imam outlined the commission’s 15-point election guideline, which will govern the election of 25 local council chairmen and 274 councillors across 4,950 polling units in the state. Imam reiterated the commission’s readiness to deliver a free, fair, and credible election.

IPAC Chairman, Isah Makujeri, commended both the NSIEC and the Police Command for their proactive collaboration and preparations. He expressed optimism that the peace accord would serve as a unifying force for political players to ensure a smooth and transparent exercise.

The signed accord strictly prohibits the use of religious, ethnic, or inflammatory language, urging all political actors to maintain decorum and respect the principles of peaceful coexistence.

Commissioner Elleman concluded by reaffirming that the Niger State Police Command will remain neutral and transparent throughout the electoral process, guaranteeing a secure and credible election for all.
