The Ogun State Government has issued a strong warning to residents living along coastal and flood-prone areas, urging them to relocate to safer locations between the last week of September and the second week of October 2025.

This advisory comes after the release of the 2025 Midterm Flood Alert, presented by the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, on Sunday.

The flood warning affects several communities, including:
Ilo, Iju, Owa, Yemule, Isheri, Warewa, Akute, Ayetoro, Itele, Iju Makun, Oni, Iwopin, Igele, Ifaara (Ogun Waterside), Ebute-Imobi (Ijebu East), Tungeji Island, and Agosasa in Ipokia Local Government Area.

According to the commissioner, the state expects unusually high rainfall and river overflow, worsened by inflows from northern Nigeria and neighboring countries such as Benin Republic.

The flooding is expected to last about two weeks during the peak of the second phase of flooding season (September – November).

    • September: Highest rainfall with 204mm

    • October: Slight drop to 190mm

    • November: Rainfall reduces to 93mm

This forecast was provided by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET).

The Ogun State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has been placed on red alert to respond to any emergencies. Temporary relocation camps have also been set up across the state to accommodate displaced residents if the floods intensify.

Additionally, the Ministry of Environment is collaborating with the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority to regulate water releases from the Oyan Dam, minimizing possible damage.

    Commissioner Oresanya also advised:

    • Avoid using borehole or well water during this period, as they may be contaminated by floodwaters.

    • Fish farmers in Eriwe, Yemule, Ijebu Ode, Ilase, Ayegbami (Yewa), and other floodplain areas should harvest their fish early to prevent losses.

     Final Word

With September predicted to bring the heaviest rains, Ogun residents in flood-prone communities are urged to take this warning seriously. Relocating early and following government advisories could help prevent avoidable tragedies.
