Former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch has openly criticized Manchester United for neglecting what he calls an “obvious issue” in their squad — the goalkeeper position.
Despite investing almost £200 million in the 2025 summer transfer window, United’s problems remain, as they sit 14th in the Premier League table with just two wins from six matches.
Big Spending, Wrong Areas
United brought in high-profile players including Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Senne Lammens, but according to Crouch, the money wasn’t directed at the club’s most pressing concern. Last weekend’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford further exposed these weaknesses, raising more questions about the team’s direction under Ruben Amorim.
The Goalkeeper Debate
Amorim continues to trust Altay Bayindir as his starting goalkeeper, while newcomer Senne Lammens — signed from Royal Antwerp for £18m — is yet to make his debut. Crouch believes this is a huge gamble.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Crouch said:
“It feels to me that the situation with the goalkeeper just hasn’t been addressed. They’ve got three number twos now. It was obvious Andre Onana wasn’t going to be the No.1, but nothing was done to fix it.”
Crouch further questioned why United didn’t target established names like Gianluigi Donnarumma or Emiliano Martinez, both of whom were available during the transfer window.
Lack of Dominance in Goal
United’s history is filled with legendary goalkeepers such as Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar, but Crouch feels the current crop doesn’t live up to that standard.
“With Martinez, it felt obvious for him to come in — he’s dominant and fits the stature Manchester United need,” Crouch added.
