Peter Obi Clarifies Goodwill Message to Oba Ladoja, Says No Disrespect Intended

In response to reactions sparked by his goodwill message, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has clarified that no disrespect was intended toward His Royal Majesty, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.

Taking to his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, Obi explained that he often uses the phrase “my dear elder brother” when addressing people close to him, especially those he holds in high regard.

“I respect protocol and authority and always try to observe them. However, those who follow me know I usually prefer the term ‘my dear elder brother’ for individuals I deeply respect,” Obi noted.

To further emphasize his consistency, Obi cited that he refers to His Royal Majesty, Igwe Alfred Achebe, Obi of Onitsha, in the same affectionate way.

The former Anambra State governor stressed that the intention behind his words was rooted in goodwill, not disregard for cultural norms or traditional authority.

“In matters like this, motive is important. I assure everyone that my words were born out of unshaken goodwill,” Obi added.

This clarification comes after some Nigerians raised concerns about what they perceived as an improper address in his message to Oba Ladoja. Obi’s statement, however, sets the record straight by reaffirming his respect for traditional rulers and cultural values.
