Peter Obi Urges FG to Prioritize Citizens’ Welfare Over Debt Policies

In a fresh appeal to the Federal Government, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged leaders to shift focus from debt-driven policies to people-centered governance that addresses the daily struggles of Nigerians.

Posting on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, Obi stressed that the government must show compassion and sensitivity to the worsening economic challenges citizens face. He emphasized that available resources should be strategically deployed into critical sectors capable of creating jobs, easing hardship, and reviving struggling institutions.

According to Obi, many essential economic players and organizations are battling with severe funding shortages, with some unable to meet their financial obligations to banks or even pay their workers. This, he said, is a clear indication that the system is failing those it should be supporting.

One of his biggest concerns was the plight of retired civil servants and military veterans, who continue to stage protests over unpaid gratuities and pensions. Obi described this as a national shame, pointing out that these individuals once gave their strength, time, and even risked their lives to build and defend Nigeria.

“It is disgraceful that those who built this nation with their sweat and defended it with their lives are reduced to begging for what is rightfully theirs, while the government boasts of excess revenue,” Obi lamented.

Obi’s remarks highlight the growing frustration among citizens over policies that worsen poverty instead of offering solutions. His call is a reminder that true leadership prioritizes welfare, job creation, and dignity for all citizens—especially those who have already served the nation.
