In a tragic turn of events, operatives of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade have been arrested following a shooting incident at Onitsha Main Market, which claimed the life of a pregnant woman and left others injured.
According to eyewitnesses, the operatives were carrying out an enforcement exercise at the bustling market when a heated confrontation erupted between them and traders. The disagreement escalated, leading to gunshots that caused panic among both traders and customers.
While some sources within the market reported that five people lost their lives, including a pregnant woman, police authorities clarified that only one death was confirmed, while four others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals.
This unfortunate incident has sparked widespread condemnation, particularly regarding the conduct of certain state-backed enforcement agencies.
Government’s Reaction
Responding to the development, the Anambra State Government distanced itself from the actions of the operatives. It described the officers involved as unauthorized personnel who acted without approval from the OCHA Brigade leadership.
Mr. Celestine Anere, the Managing Director of the OCHA Brigade, stated:
“The operation was not approved by the agency’s leadership, and such unsanctioned actions go against the guiding standards of the Brigade. Those involved have been taken into custody and will be handed over to the Police and DSS for full investigation.”
He further emphasized that Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration remains committed to law, order, and accountability, promising that any staff found guilty will face strict disciplinary action.
Commitment to Discipline and Order
Mr. Anere reassured residents that all enforcement activities of the Brigade must strictly follow the law establishing the agency. He added that the government’s goal is to build a clean, safe, and livable Anambra State.
