The Super Eagles of Nigeria are finding themselves in a tricky position as the race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup heats up. Following a 1-1 draw with South Africa on Tuesday evening, Nigeria now sits 8th in the second-best loser ranking, which could determine the remaining playoff spot for African teams.
The match in Bloemfontein saw an unfortunate own goal by William Troost-Ekong, before Calvin Bassey leveled the score for Nigeria. Despite their efforts, the result left the Super Eagles with little breathing room in the qualification race.
At the moment, Nigeria is in second place in Group C with 11 points, trailing group leaders South Africa by six points.
The Current Standings
According to the updated standings, here’s how the second-best loser ranking looks after the recent fixtures:
-
Gabon – 18 points (7 matches)
-
Madagascar – 16 points (8 matches)
-
DR Congo – 16 points (8 matches)
-
Burkina Faso – 15 points (8 matches)

-
Namibia – 15 points (8 matches)
-
Uganda – 15 points (8 matches)
-

Only the top four teams in this ranking will qualify for a playoff, where just one additional World Cup slot is up for grabs.
