A tragic incident has struck Wang community in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, where seven miners were killed and three others injured after armed men suspected to be Fulani militias attacked a mining site on Saturday night.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that the victims were carrying out mining activities late in the night when the attackers suddenly invaded the site and opened fire, leading to multiple casualties.
Confirming the attack, Christopher Luka, a youth leader in Wang, noted that the miners ignored repeated warnings from both security agencies and the recently inaugurated Agro Rangers against night mining. He emphasized that residents had been advised to avoid the site due to increasing threats, but some miners continued to sneak in after security patrols had withdrawn.
“The tragedy could have been prevented if the victims had adhered to security warnings,” Luka told journalists on Monday.
Two survivors, Shanono Usman Adam and Maren Moses, recounted the horrific incident, explaining that the attackers caught the miners off guard while they were working. The deceased victims have since been transported to the mortuary at Bokkos General Hospital.
This attack adds to the growing concerns over insecurity in mining communities within Plateau State, where residents continue to grapple with fear and uncertainty.
