Former Kogi State Deputy Governor, Edward Onoja, has opened up about the reasons former Governor Yahaya Bello did not back him as his successor.
Speaking during an interview on the Mic On podcast on Saturday, Onoja explained that Bello, despite earlier promises, chose Governor Usman Ododo over him.
According to Onoja, Bello personally told him three major reasons behind the decision:
-
“Too Qualified” for the Role: Bello reportedly said Onoja’s capacity was overwhelming and might not fit his succession plan.
-
Lack of Popularity Among His People: The former governor claimed that some people in Kogi East did not fully support Onoja because of his stance in backing a non-Igala candidate.
-
Plans for a Federal Role: Bello hinted at potential positions at the federal level where he believed Onoja could serve alongside him.
Despite the disappointment, Onoja stressed that he has no regrets serving under Bello, both as Chief of Staff and later as Deputy Governor.
“No regrets for serving with Yahaya Bello. He gave me opportunities to serve, learn, grow, network, and gain national recognition,” Onoja said.
He further revealed that Bello had earlier encouraged him to prepare for succession, even making him and others purchase forms for the 2023 elections. However, just a day before the primaries, Bello confirmed his support for Ododo instead.
Onoja recalled his reaction at the time:
“When he broke the news to me, I told him, ‘You are the boss, you are over me, and what you see is what I see. But I hope you are not making a mistake.’”
The revelation sheds light on the dynamics of Kogi State’s political landscape and the factors that influenced Bello’s succession plan.
